National Gateway Corridors

Several rail routes have been identified as “National Gateway Corridors,” meaning that they are vital links between the Mid-Atlantic ports and key distribution points and population centers.

The National Gateway public-private partnership plans to improve ports, upgrade rail lines and prepare bridges and tunnels as needed to accommodate the more efficient double-stack trains. The project will concentrate on the following areas:

  • I-95 Corridor between North Carolina and Baltimore, Maryland, via Washington, D.C.
  • I-70/I-76 corridor between Washington, D.C. and northwest Ohio via Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Carolina Corridor between Wilmington, North Carolina and Charlotte, North Carolina
